The Art Of Worship

By Jeff Batson

Hello everyone!

Welcome to this month’s installment.

I am continuing with the subject of transition, as it pertains to moving into the role of worship leader at a new church. As mentioned previously, transition and changes are usually not easy for most of us. Another thing to keep in mind is that it is very likely it’s not easy for those who you will be leading either.

Besides all of the challenges we will be facing as the new worship leader, there are also several challenges ahead for those whom we will be leading. We are accustomed to a certain way of doing things, and it will require great patience and effort on the part of all involved to make the transition become as smooth as possible.

This is where humility is key. Although as leaders, we must be willing to provide leadership, we must also strive to do so with humble and gracious hearts. If we are set on always having our own way and leading in a closed minded fashion, we can end up coming across more like dictators instead of leaders. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the sound of that.

In the last few weeks, I have been faced with the challenge of working with a particular musician who is a very skilled payer, but has a very large ego. I am being very patient with this person and seeking to come across in a kind and positive way. There has been a time or two, where I’ve had to be very direct and bold with this person in order to get them to follow my instruction. This is not always easy for me, as I am a very agreeable and easy going kind of guy.

But I need to remember I am the leader, and part of my job as the worship leader is to provide not just leadership, but direction to the team, even when it may not always feel comfortable.

I am learning how to communicate better with everyone on the team as I get to know them. So far, for the most part, things are going relatively well, with everyone being very gracious and patient with me.

I look forward to seeing how things continue to progress as I am getting to know everyone better and they get to know me better. All in all, I must say that up to this point, this has been both a challenging and fun process for me and I consider myself very blessed to have the opportunity to serve this team and the church in this way.

Until next time, let’s all continue to worship the King!
